At the forefront of this movement is Tové Kane, the only Laughter Yoga Master Trainer on the island of Ireland and one of only three in the UK. Based in Newtownabbey, Tové delivers engaging, evidence-based Laughter Yoga sessions to individuals, businesses, and communities, offering a dynamic approach to wellness that is as enjoyable as it is transformative.

A published author, international speaker, and award-winning broadcaster, Tové has built a career on helping people rediscover their joy, resilience, and confidence. Her expertise in Laughter Yoga has led her to work with corporate teams, healthcare professionals, educators, special needs groups, and community leaders, proving that laughter is not just for fun—it’s a tool for healing, connection, and performance enhancement.

What is Laughter Yoga?

Laughter Yoga is a revolutionary wellness practice developed by Dr. Madan Kataria in 1995. It combines unconditional laughter with yogic breathing techniques (Pranayama), helping people experience the physical and mental health benefits of laughter—without needing jokes or humour. Through guided exercises, participants engage in playful interactions, deep breathing, and rhythmic clapping, triggering real, contagious laughter that promotes deep relaxation and emotional release.

Why Laughter Yoga? The Science Behind the Smiles

Tové’s work is backed by decades of research demonstrating the profound effects of laughter on the body and mind. Scientific studies show that laughter:

  • Reduces stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline

  • Boosts endorphins, the body’s natural “feel-good” chemicals

  • Strengthens the immune system by increasing antibody production

  • Improves oxygen circulation, leading to increased energy and focus

  • Lowers blood pressure, reducing the risk of heart disease

  • Enhances emotional resilience, helping individuals better manage anxiety and depression.

Laughter Yoga for Every Setting: Real-Life Impact

Tové has introduced Laughter Yoga to a variety of settings, proving its adaptability and effectiveness across different audiences.

Corporate Wellness & Leadership Development

Stress, burnout, and disengagement are common challenges in today’s workplaces. Companies such as Google, IBM, and the NHS have already incorporated Laughter Yoga into their wellness programmes. Tové works with HR leaders, managers, and executives to integrate laughter as a tool for stress management, team bonding, and leadership development. Her sessions have helped businesses:

  • Improve communication and teamwork

  • Increase employee morale and engagement

  • Foster creativity and innovation

  • Reduce workplace stress and absenteeism.

Healthcare & Care Homes

For care professionals and residents in hospitals, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centres, Laughter Yoga has been a lifeline for improving mood, mobility, and connection. Tové’s work with Alzheimer’s and dementia patients has demonstrated that laughter can break through barriers of memory loss, helping individuals engage and find joy in the present moment.

Education & Special Needs Support

Children are natural laughers, but exam pressure, social anxiety, and learning difficulties can steal their joy. Tové has worked with schools and special needs educators to help children:

  • Boost confidence and social skills

  • Improve focus and learning retention

  • Develop emotional intelligence and self-regulation

Laughter Yoga is particularly effective for children with autism and ADHD, as the structured playfulness helps with sensory integration, emotional expression, and social bonding.

Community Engagement & Social Inclusion

From mental health support groups to refugee integration programs, Laughter Yoga has become a powerful tool for resilience, connection, and hope. Tové has led sessions with charities, youth groups, and trauma survivors, proving that laughter is a universal language of healing.

What is Laughter Yoga?

Breaking Down the Basics

Laughter Yoga is a unique exercise programme where anyone can laugh without the use of jokes or comedy.

Laughter is initiated with eye contact and a willingness (in a group dynamic) to laugh for health and happiness no matter a person's current emotional, physical, or mental state.

Scientific studies prove that the body and brain can't differentiate between initiated laughter and spontaneous laughter—you get the same physiological and psychological health benefits.

The connection with yoga is to do with deep breathing exercises interspersed between laughter exercises.

This is becoming more mainstream and Laughter Yoga is found in over 120 countries after being created by a medical doctor; Dr Madan Kataria in India in 1995.

Want to know more about Laughter Yoga?

I'm here to spill the beans on this unique form of joyous exercise and how it's so much more than your typical laugh-out-loud moment.

What on Earth is Laughter Yoga?

Most people think of laughter in terms of jokes. Maybe you know someone who has a weird laugh and hearing them sets you off laughing. Perhaps you’ve found yourself laughing to cover up an awkward moment. Laughter Yoga isn’t about teasing or mocking someone. Think of it as a laughter party for your mind, body, and spirit. Laughter Yoga combines laughter exercises with yogic deep-breathing techniques, offering a full-body workout for your happiness.

Created by the brilliant Dr Madan Kataria, this practice revolves around the belief that laughter is a choice, and you don't need jokes or comedy to embrace it. I’m all for jokes and comedy, we just want to avoid hurting feelings. This is a practice that helps you generate happy feelings even if you’re hurting when you start.

What Are people Saying About Laughter Yoga?

"It was my first time on your online Laughter Yoga session, I didn't know what to expect, but I feel so much better, thank you Tové."

Sinéad Keenan

"Tové your sessions are always so much fun and I feel so energised, I don't know where you come up with so much creativity!"

Nicky Griffiths

"Laughter Yoga is the best thing we've done at our office for teambuilding. Tové got us all laughing for no reason."

Kevin Porter

"I've never laughed so much at work, even my cheeks hurt! I'd say the breathing and relaxing at the end were more comfortable for me but I enjoyed it all, thank you."

Mental health problems cost UK economy at least £117.9 billion a year—new research

Mental Health costs UK £117.9 Billion a year.jpg
Mental health problems are costly.
Just HOW costly will shock you!
Mental health problems cost the UK economy at least £117.9 billion annually according to a new report published by Mental Health Foundation and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

The cost of mental health problems is equivalent to around 5 per cent of the UK’s GDP.

Across the UK there were 10.3 million recorded instances of mental ill health over a one-year period.

The third most common cause of disability was depression.

Mental health challenges cost Irish economy
€ 8.2 billion a year

Mental health costs.jpg
One in four Irish people say that their mental health deteriorated during the pandemic and one in five say their general health has declined, according to a survey published by RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences (August 2021).

Workplace pressure strips us of our sense of humour.

We lose our creativity.

We lose our health and vitality.

It becomes harder to make decisions.

It's difficult to cope when we are under sustained pressure. Our energy gets depleted. Ultimately, the stress builds up and we have to take sick leave.

Absenteeism costs businesses

in the UK & Ireland billions!

It's just as well Laughter Yoga doesn't rely on a sense of humour, or jokes...

...it's an exercise programme packed full of wisdom and delight, and anyone can do it!

Laughter Yoga UK & Ireland
CAN help you destress quickly!
AND...it IS possible to destress
on your own and with others at work.
Scientific studies validate the immediate effect of
Laughter Yoga in reducing cortisol levels.

I made a conscious effort to bring more joy and laughter into my life and now I teach individuals and companies how to use Laughter Yoga for:
Workplace wellness
Personal Team-building,
Seniors how to improve mobility and stay mentally active even in care homes,
Youngsters to build emotional intelligence especially when bullying is rife,
Communities who need to reconnect,
Women to navigate menopause in the workplace,
Special needs, people who are frequently overlooked,
And anyone invested in healing, maintaining, and boosting mental health.
